"Furthermore, there are four protections": First, "protection of life" means protecting and upholding the True Dharma without sparing body or life, or protecting the life-faculty of others without harming it, or protecting one's own right livelihood so as not to generate evil karma. Second, "protection of power" means protecting prajñā to destroy the hosts of Māra's adversaries, or protecting physical strength for the benefit of others, or protecting the five powers to destroy enemies without yielding. "Protection of the mind against defilement" means protecting against the defilements so they do not contaminate the mind, or giving rise to defilements for the sake of protecting the True Dharma in order to drive away evil persons who would destroy the True Dharma. "Protection of correct expedients" means practicing the True Dharma through skillful means.
