The 'four kinds of expedients for gathering the assembly' are the four articles of gathering: giving, kind words, beneficial action, and common enterprise, corresponding to them in order. The four deaths are as explained earlier in fascicle five. Furthermore, regarding 'there are four paths of purification, 1. the completion of faculties without effort, and so forth': these are the four courses of practice, namely difficult progress with sluggish supernormal knowledge, difficult progress with swift supernormal knowledge, easy progress with sluggish supernormal knowledge, and easy progress with swift supernormal knowledge, corresponding to them in order. Dull faculties are called sluggish, and sharp faculties are called swift. The preliminary and formless levels are called difficult because concentration and wisdom are biased; the basic dhyānas are called easy because the dual path operates. Although the preliminary level is said to have joy and pleasure, because it is not complete, it is only called difficult. 'Faculties with effort' refers to refining the faculties. However, in the Bodhisattvabhūmi, according to the distinction between ordinary persons and noble ones, it differs from this, as will be explained later up to the Śrāvakabhūmi.
