Among the four paths of purification, as the Vibhāṣā says, Abhidharma is called the true Dharma, and Vinaya is called regulation. The reason Abhidharma is not mentioned here is that the former two major divisions were mostly spoken by the Buddha, whereas the third, although there are parts spoken by the Buddha, was mostly spoken by noble disciples; hence, this text briefly omits it. Regarding 'one is pleasant but not beneficial, and so forth': benefit in saṃsāra is called pleasant; benefit transcending the world is called beneficial; the distinctions among 'and so forth' may be understood accordingly. That is, kings and sacrifice-masters who perform horse sacrifices: those kings constantly harbor anxiety and fear while subduing enemies and so forth, being able to cause both self and others to endure suffering; those sacrifice-masters give rise to extreme arbitrariness, slaughtering horses and so forth for sacrifices, being able to cause both self and others to suffer without merit.
