In the numerical section of eights, there are ten categories in total. "Giving out of indolence" means that when seekers come, one does not give comprehensively, nor does one go out to give, but merely waits for them to come and ask. "Not following one's wish" is giving out of fear, fearing one's own poverty and suffering. "Giving out of lingering attachment" is giving according to family tradition, meaning practicing giving because of following the customs of ancestors. "Hoping" is giving in expectation of repayment, expecting another to repay oneself, and hence giving in this life. "Surpassing through contempt" is giving to repay kindness: if someone gives to me, I make a return gift to them, not giving for the sake of revering the field of merit; this is called contempt; or, relying on one's own wealth and nobility, one gives rise to a disdainful mind, giving to someone because they run errands for oneself. "Those who seek with longing" give for the sake of seeking the blissful karmic reward of celestial rebirth. "Those who seek renown among others" practice giving seeking reputation. Among "faultless givings," this refers to giving that seeks provisions toward nirvāṇa, and giving that seeks a vessel for the path in order to proceed to good destinies.
