Regarding "if one contemplates forms, etc.": Tai says that because the concentrations of the eight stations of mastery all contemplate concentrated form, it is called "if one contemplates form"; because the form inside the concentrated mind resembles form outside concentration, it says "as if contemplating." Although the eight stations of mastery precede the three liberations, with respect to the three liberations they are all called preliminary means. The eight, viewed with respect to the three liberations, are the path of preliminary means; therefore, corresponding to the liberations, they are called the three stations of mastery. Here, within the concentrated mind, one contemplates the resembled form outside of concentration; but because form inside concentration differs from the diverse contemplation of form outside concentration, the sūtra names it superior knowing and superior seeing. In concentration, it is named present speech, hence called wisdom; because there is seeking, it is called seeing. Just as when contemplating form inside superior concentration, wisdom and vision, seeking, and discerning the resembling form inside concentration are similar to form outside concentration, it is also the seeking and discerning of form outside concentration; hence it says "it is also thus."
