此中觀外諸色乃至若勝者，牒經，謂觀非三摩地所行現所得色者，此釋前經觀大小諸色義，在定前加行聞惠位中作此種種色觀故。

Regarding "herein, contemplating various external forms up to ... if superior": this cites the sūtra. Under "namely contemplating form presently obtained that is not the sphere of samādhi," this explains the meaning of contemplating forms large and small in the previous sūtra: this is because one engages in this contemplation of various forms during the stage of hearing-wisdom prior to concentration as a preliminary preparation.
