Regarding "numerical error, that is, one with visual floaters seeing images of multiple moons in the place of a single moon": herein Jing explains: The eye faculty and eye consciousness together apprehend multiple moons; because this is an error, it is not direct perception. Therefore, among the five faculties and five consciousnesses, there are valid cognitions and non-valid cognitions, and they cannot all be subsumed under direct perception. Now I explain: the eye consciousness and the concurrently cognizing mental consciousness both apprehend a single moon, but unclarifiedly; therefore, the subsequent investigating mental consciousness mistakenly apprehends multiple moons. Although the eye consciousness and so forth are not clear, they actually cognize one; therefore, the five consciousnesses are exclusively direct perception.
