Regarding "herein, establishing the sensory realm and apprehending the foundational object, not already thought of, not to be thought of, and so forth": this means that the external real earth and other [elements], being the objective base (maula-vastu) of the meditative object, constitute the establishing of the sensory realm and apprehending the foundational object, because they establish the reflex-image object of the meditative mind. The essence of this present object and the mind that can apprehend it are called direct perception. When one goes through the preliminary expedients regarding the earth and other realms, if the understanding has not yet been accomplished, it is called "to be thought of," and so forth; they are not the essence of a present object, and the mind that can apprehend them is not meditative direct perception. This inversely illuminates that establishing the sensory realm and apprehending the foundational object is called a present object.
