若界頌者，謂字體三百頌名界，波膩尼仙所造，聲明一千頌名略本頌，則此頌也。

As for 'root verses' (*dhātu-kārikā*): the three hundred verses on the letter-substances are called 'roots' (*dhātu*), composed by the ṛṣi Pāṇini; the one thousand verses on grammar called 'the abridged root-verses' are precisely these verses.
