'How can one in concentration cross the vast sensual craving while not yet having attained the waist-boat?': this asks how a trainee, as an expedient means for severing the five fetters binding to the lower realms, when not yet having attained [the stage of] an adept, [crosses] with the mental waist-boat. Just as in the world when crossing the sea one uses a gourd, a leather bag, or other materials made into a float wrapped around the waist and called a 'waist-boat', the sea is a metaphor for saṃsāra, the mental consciousness is like the waist, and wisdom is like the boat.
