5.433

如如我劬勞者，明佛昔日六年苦行虛為劬勞。如是如是劣者，由行苦行善法退失故名為劣。如如我劣已，如是如是住者，知我善法退捨邪行。住已如是如是漂者，復往外道欝頭藍子等所隨順觀察名為漂流。

'Just as I toiled': this clarifies that the Buddha's six years of ascetic practice in the past were vain toil. 'Just so was I deficient': because of practicing asceticism, wholesome dharmas declined and were lost; hence it is called 'deficient'. 'Just as after I was deficient, just so did I abide': knowing that my wholesome dharmas had declined, I abandoned heterodox practices. 'Having abided, just so did I drift': going once again to heterodox masters such as Udraka Rāmaputra and following along to observe them is called 'drifting'.
