The explanation of the third verse is divided into three: first, it explains the first line; next, from 'The places of all evil conduct should be swiftly kept far away from' downward, it explains the second and third lines—all unwholesome karmas are called 'evil', and the useless, erroneous austerities of non-Buddhists are called 'pointless causes', and because both are abandoned from afar; third, from 'If toward the higher four noble truths' downward, it explains the fourth line.
