1. 'Livelihood without artifice' means being free from four matters: (1) not having an arrogant and improper livelihood; (2) not relying on influential families; (3) not scheming for famous clans; (4) not deceptively claiming noble teachings. Just as ordinary worldly people rely on crafts and consider them skillful livelihoods, unlawfully seeking [gain], the true bhikṣu is not like this, for he does not rely on these four to unlawfully seek food, drink, and clothing like them. 2. 'Not disparaging oneself': if one unlawfully hoards food and clothing with craving, not keeping robes and bowl, that is called disparaging oneself; the bhikṣu is not like this, which is called not disparaging oneself. 3. 'Delighting in excellence': longing for and loving the recluse, longing for and loving the points of training and firm precepts. 4. 'The faculties': namely, pure livelihood, contentment, and so on; that is, the faculty of joy, the faculty of wisdom, the faculty of mindfulness, and so on. 5. 'Complete liberation': because bonds, fetters, entanglements, and seeds are all liberated. These are called perfecting the five factors.
