Hearing refers to the wisdom arisen from hearing, because hearing takes the teaching as its condition; the various dharmas accomplished taking this as a cause are called 'arisen from hearing'. Thus that wisdom and its associated dharmas, together with the objects of hearing—whether words or meanings—and the fruitions obtained, constitute the essence of this stage. Where it was said earlier under attention that hearing conditions only dharmas, it is because it seldom conditions meanings.
