Contemplation of the three matters: Having signs refers to the objective matter; investigation and reflection are the subjective matters. Contemplation of the four practices, as stated in the ninth fascicle of the Abhidharma and the Śrāvakabhūmi, contemplates the distinct objective supports of the six matters: 1. Meaning, which is the distinct meanings of suffering, impermanence, and so on, occurring in the expedients prior to the path of seeing; 2. Matter, which refers to the functions of various matters, such as arising having the function of suffering; 3. Characteristic, which refers to the essential characteristic of the truth of cessation; 4. Grade, which refers to the superior, middling, and inferior grades of phenomena, or because the truth of the path of the three vehicles has categories; the above three occur in the stage of the path of seeing; 5. Time, which occurs in the path of cultivation, arising subsequent to the path of seeing, or contemplates the three times; 6. Principle, which occurs in the path of beyond-training. Alternatively, matters refers to the aggregates, elements, sense fields, and so on; time refers to the three times; and principles refers to the four kinds of principles.
