Tai says: Attached to an ordinary being's locus of reliance, the five aggregates, there is the essential mark of the superior untainted seeds of the śrāvaka gotra; it is not among the external six dusts of mountains and rivers, and hence is subsumed under the six sense spheres. Nanda and others do not accept the doctrine of originally existent seeds; explaining this text, they say: Just as a fertile woman has the capacity to bear a child, she is said to possess the human seed, yet within that woman's body there was never an embryo; this is just like that: because one has the capability to attain realization, one is said to have seeds. This meaning of capability of attainment is not obtained through cultivation, and is thus natural.
