Regarding the third [section], explaining the limits of cultivation as slow or swift, there are three types in all: First, those of the utmost duration: a śrāvaka, at the very most, undergoes sixty kalpas cultivating the roots of goodness conducive to liberation and achieves parinirvāṇa in their final body. Second, those not of the utmost duration: there are some who undergo multiple lifetimes up to one kalpa, and only then achieve parinirvāṇa. Third, those who achieve parinirvāṇa most swiftly must undergo three lifetimes. In the first lifetime, they arouse the mind to cultivate the goodness conducive to liberation, namely the contemplation of the fivefold stilling of the mind and the general and specific applications of mindfulness. In the second lifetime, they again cultivate the applications of mindfulness, proceeding from the general applications of mindfulness to cultivate toward heat and summits, or enter the lower [degree of] acceptance, or enter the middle [degree of] acceptance, which is called achievement. In the third lifetime, again from the lower acceptance or from the middle acceptance, they arouse the supreme acceptance and worldly supreme dharmas, enter the path of seeing, up to the ultimate fruition of arhatship. Or, this person, having attained entry into the noble [path] in the third lifetime, passes away in the body of the first fruition, takes rebirth, undergoes seven existences, and expediently achieves parinirvāṇa.
