Under falling into the two extremes, clarifying the extreme of ascetic practice, there are briefly ten kinds: (1) practicing the yoga of severance relying on thorns; (2) relying on ashes and dust; (3) carrying a wooden pestle and lying upon it at night; (4) carrying and wearing wooden boards and lying upon boards at night; (5) squatting like a fox so that even in the latter part of the night [one's back] does not touch the ground; (6) sitting squatting like a fox with the posterior touching the ground; the yoga of severance applies to what is held by the six above; however, [Master] Tai says: "Cultivating the practice of severing for nirvāṇa is just the practice of yoga." If relying on this explanation, it should be a separate view, because an explanation is made by adding the word "or"; namely, it is false yogic practice; (7) there are non-Buddhists continuously serving fire, three times a day; (8) fixing to pillars in the water, from beginning to end holding one pillar with one hand and stepping on one pillar with one foot, ascending the pillar three times a day to gaze at the sun and turning following the sun; (9) standing on a pillar on one foot and turning following the sun; (10) excluding these nine views, the remaining ninety-six kinds of false conduct of non-Buddhists and so forth.
