四、明念防護意，謂如卒爾眼識逢違順色，次起分別意識尋求決定。若不防護此分別意識，其次即入染淨心位生諸煩惱，故名將生。

Fourth, clarify the mind protected by mindfulness: for instance, when an initial eye-consciousness abruptly encounters disagreeable or agreeable forms, subsequently the discriminative mental consciousness arises, seeking and determining. If one does not protect this discriminative mental consciousness, it will immediately enter the state of defiled or pure mind and give rise to afflictions; hence it is called "about to arise."
