In the first explanation of not grasping signs and secondary marks, there are two rounds of interpretation. The first interpretation: the visual consciousness grasps its own cognitive object, and before greed and so forth have arisen, it is called "grasping signs"; if one can distance oneself from such object-marks, it is called "not grasping signs"; whereas if the visual consciousness immediately followed by mental consciousness grasps signs and can give rise to greed and so forth, it is called "grasping secondary marks." As with the eye, so too with the remaining [faculties], the ear and so forth. The second interpretation: the six faculties confronting objects is called "grasping signs"; the inquiring mental consciousness discerning universal characteristics is called "grasping secondary marks." Below, the arising and non-arising of taints are distinguished.
