Fifth, explaining the state of practicing equanimity. The text divides into two parts: first, explaining the stage of practice, wherein Master Bei says: when associated with wholesome or indeterminate equanimity, having mindfulness to guard and protect [the faculties] is called the "state of equanimity"; second, explaining the guarding of the mind, which is again divided into two parts: first, briefly indicating the two marks of the state of practicing equanimity; and second, from "How does one not grasp the signs among forms cognized by the eye?" onwards, broadly explaining it. Within this there are three points: 1. explaining that by not grasping the signs and secondary marks, one never gives rise to bad taints relying on them; 2. from "If through lapse of mindfulness..." onwards, explaining that if one loses mindfulness and bad taints arise, one then cultivates restraint; 3. from "If among forms cognized by the eye, one should urge on the visual faculty..." onwards, explaining that through the two marks one is able to skillfully guard and protect with respect to the two equanimities, causing the mind to proceed correctly.
