Second, in looking and gazing: if one unexpectedly sees visible form without prior attention, it is called 'looking' (du), which is the instantaneous visual consciousness and the simultaneous mental consciousness. If one first directs attention and then sees visible form and so forth, it is called 'gazing' (zhan), which is the two consciousnesses in equal outflow. 'What should not be looked at or gazed upon' refers to women's forms and so forth; knowing the time to look and gaze means when one is not dispelling fatigue or sleepiness, or when observing decay to generate the practice of revulsion, then one may look and gaze, while at other times one should not; 'in accordance with what should be looked at', etc., means knowing that what is done is for the purpose of cultivating the path, and thus one must look and gaze; if it increases defilements, one should not look or gaze.
