Herein, it first discerns the differences among the ten perceptions, of which there are four: 1. Discerning the perceptions differentiated into the perceptions of impermanence, suffering, non-self, and what is disagreeable. Contemplation is of two kinds: general contemplation and specific contemplation. The former was general contemplation; herein is specific contemplation. Specific contemplation has two kinds: first, contemplation of phenomena; second, contemplation of sentient beings. The former was a contemplation admonishing all phenomena; herein it contemplates the different faults and evils of sentient beings. 2. Differentiating the perceptions of death and impermanence; this has two meanings: first, contemplating the final impermanence of all conditioned formations is called the perception of death, while contemplating the momentary impermanence of all conditioned formations is called the perception of impermanence; second, contemplating what is appropriated is called the perception of death, while contemplating all conditioned formations is called the perception of impermanence. 3. Discerning the difference between the perception of impurity and the perception of revulsion toward food: impurity counteracts lustful greed, while revulsion toward food counteracts food greed. 4. Discerning abandonment, detachment, and cessation.
