According to the explanation in the Da zhidu lun, there are three meanings: 1. Abandoning the three poisons is called the perception of abandonment, because it abandons the causes of bad destinies; detachment from craving is called detachment, because it departs from the causes of humans and gods; exhaustion of suffering is called cessation, because it ceases the fruits of the five destinies. 2. Cultivating the four wholesome roots to be free of defilements is called detachment; cultivating the taintless path to sever defilements is called abandonment; upon entering nirvāṇa, the cessation of all sufferings is called cessation. 3. Severing defilements to obtain cessation with remainder is called abandonment; obtaining cessation without remainder to exhaust all sufferings is called cessation; the expedient means for these two is called detachment.
