In answering the third question, regarding 'this is what bodhisattvas actually practice, and is not a gift permitted in intention within this meaning,' and so forth, Jing says: This resolves a doubt and objection. The objection states: A bodhisattva practices giving originally to bring peace and happiness to the other person; how could one coerce one's wife and children, down to eldest sons and daughters, making them suffer, in order to give them away to another? To resolve this objection, it is therefore said: These bodhisattvas never coerce wives and children in practicing giving, and this is not a gift permitted in intention here, because one does not bring happiness to another person by coercing this person. If so, why was it said earlier that one gives away wives and children? To answer this question, the intention of the answer below is that a bodhisattva gives away wives and children through three conditions: first, having masterly power capable of subduing them, knowing oneself to be blameless when giving them away; second, through expedient means, exhorting and instructing them so that they have no resentment; third, knowing that the other person receiving one's wife and children will not harm them. By possessing these three meanings, one gives away wives and children; lacking even one, it is impermissible.
