As for 'begging alms in succession', Venerable Yuan says: ordinary foolish people crave flavors and abandon the poor to approach the rich; those of the two vehicles have narrow compassion and abandon the rich to follow the poor; the practice of the Great Beings departs from greed and leaves behind narrowness, not discriminating between poor and rich, hence it is called 'begging in succession'. However, according to this text, the Śrāvakas should likewise not discriminate between poor and rich and beg in succession.
