Regarding the differences in entering nobility and attaining the fruits: first, the one not yet free from desire refers to when, as an ordinary person, if one has not yet subdued afflictions, or has subdued up to five grades of the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm, all are called 'not yet free from desire.' Second, the one partially free from desire has previously subdued six grades up to eight grades. Third, the one already free from desire has already subdued nine grades of the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm, up to perhaps subduing the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation up to the sphere of nothingness, and is called 'already free from desire.' One should know that here, when it says that one who has not at all been freed from all desires enters the direct realization of the truths and realizes the fruit of stream-enterer, this is provisionally based on one who has not subdued the afflictions of cultivation at all, hence it says 'not at all free from desire'; in principle, one who has subdued up to five grades also realizes the first fruit. The one 'partially free from desire' has abandoned six of the nine grades, hence is called 'partially free from desire.'
