The 'depressed mind' refers to co-occurring with lethargy. The 'uplifted mind': because the mind sinks and does not cognize pure and wonderful objects, one urges the mind to be uplifted. The 'restless mind' refers to being overly agitated and elevated, that is, bound by the entanglement of restlessness. From the 'concentrated mind' downwards, there are six minds arising relying on the four dhyānas and four formless [absorptions]: three are antidotes capable of remedying the afflictions of the form and formless realms; three minds are obstacles. First, regarding 'concentrated mind' meaning 'having been liberated from the hindrances', this restates the threshold absorption. 'Furthermore, capable of realizing and entering the fundamental dhyānas' refers to the mind that attains entry into the four dhyānas, the preparatory and uninterrupted path-minds capable of detaching from form-realm afflictions. The 'unconcentrated mind' refers to not yet being able to enter, which is the mind overcome by obstacles. The 'well-cultivated mind' is the path-of-liberation mind that detaches from form-realm afflictions. The 'poorly cultivated mind' is the obstacle. The 'well-liberated mind' refers to 'being completely and definitively liberated from all', which is the preparatory, uninterrupted, and liberation paths detaching from the afflictions of the four formless realms. The 'poorly liberated mind' is the obstacle. In this way, the fourteen minds, 'arising through the time of abiding', arise through entering absorption and abiding on the cognitive object; this text speaks generally. In 'arising at the time of abiding based on the stage of purifying hindrances, there are eight kinds of mind, etc.': among the eight, four are antidotes comprised within the threshold absorption, capable of detaching from the five hindrances, and hence called the stage of purifying hindrances. In 'arising at the time of abiding based on the stage of purifying afflictions, there are six kinds of mind, etc.': three are antidotes, capable of remedying the afflictions of the form and formless realms, as distinguished previously.
