泰云：十四心中，前八心是定方便道，依伏現蓋清淨地住定時起，後六心依斷煩惱住定時起。基云：依淨蓋地等者，此中解住時十四心，未得定無間道住加行道中，名淨蓋地，起八種心，依定無間道斷煩惱，起彼六心。

Tai says: Among the fourteen minds, the first eight minds are the expedients of absorption, arising at the time of abiding in absorption based on the purified stage where manifest hindrances are subdued; the latter six minds arise at the time of abiding in absorption based on the severance of afflictions. Ji says: in 'based on the stage of purifying hindrances, etc.', here it explains the fourteen minds at the time of abiding. When one has not yet attained the uninterrupted path of absorption and abides in the preparatory path, it is called the stage of purifying hindrances, where eight kinds of mind arise; based on the uninterrupted path of absorption that severs afflictions, those six minds arise.
