In the fifth, Master Jing explains: If one takes an undead body endowed with consciousness as an object, it is called abiding in the internal body; if one takes a deceased body devoid of consciousness, the stages such as cyanosis belonging to sentient beings as objects, it is called abiding in the external body; if one takes as an object the form of a presently dead corpse devoid of consciousness [with respect to] its nature endowed with consciousness and its conscious bodily form in the past preceding moment before death, it is called abiding internally; again taking as an object the continuous succession of the present corpse in future time as having a nature devoid of consciousness, similar reality, and equal reality, it is called abiding externally. Jointly contemplating both extremes is called abiding in the internal and external body; being equal with external dharmas is called equal reality.
