7.246

初番，明於緣過未不現見境惡不善法，其未生者欲令不生，其已生者欲令永斷，是名策勵。於緣現在現見境惡不善法，其未生者令不生，已生永斷發勤精進。

In the first round, it is explained that with respect to evil and unwholesome phenomena that take past and future unmanifest objects as their intentional objects, regarding those that have not yet arisen, one wishes to make them not arise, and regarding those that have already arisen, one wishes to abandon them forever: this is called “exerting effort.” With respect to evil and unwholesome phenomena that take present manifest objects as their intentional objects, regarding those that have not yet arisen, one makes them not arise, and regarding those that have already arisen, one abandons them forever: this is “putting forth energetic striving.”
