Regarding the statement, “Through two conditions one distinctly knows the dormant tendencies, namely through volition regarding unmanifest objects and through equanimity regarding manifest objects”: among the eight abandonments, it is only based on the last two abandonments that one knows the cutting off of dormant tendencies. Because bodily and vocal actions initiated at all times constantly cultivate calming and insight, one knows that volition regarding the unmanifest has already separated from dormant tendencies; and because the mind remains undefiled regarding objects of affliction in the three periods of time, one knows the dormant tendencies are cut off; hence the text says, “and through equanimity regarding manifest objects.” Ji says: “He, due to such, up to operating distinctively,” and so forth: this is cited to clarify the origin of the eight abandonments; these eight abandonments were formerly named the eight pleasures and the eight provisions.
