Below, the latter eight subsume the former four. The eight abandonments are precisely the four yogas capable of cutting off dormant tendencies in the preceding fascicle 28, namely desire, striving, faith, and skillful means. Although the Abhidharma has four kinds of mutual subsumption, they are entirely different and cannot be reconciled. As for why the sequence here differs from the four yogas in fascicle 28: herein, the sequence of the eight abandonments arises in succession as found in the text. The earlier fascicle says that among the four yogas, faith is the first; the Abhidharma agrees, and so that treatise's text takes faith as the cause of desire. The meaning is: when establishing desire and striving, they are not separate from faith, and faith properly comes first; only because one has faith in the Buddha and so forth does one then give rise to desire, etc. Now, because [they] are not separate from faith, faith is spoken of after them. This text of the Abhidharma itself reconciles the four yogas by stating the sequence of their arising, and therefore faith is first.
