Regarding "if one has perpetually abandoned the afflictions that induce rebirth in the form and formless realms, establishing the arhat" below: citations are brought to corroborate and establish [the fruits], yet they corroborate only the latter three. The citation corroborating the first fruit has already been stated previously, so it is not adduced now. It can also be spoken in continuation with the preceding: namely, a person of stream-entry has already abandoned the three fetters. Now, advancing further to abandon the afflictions of cultivation, having eliminated the former six grades of greed, hostility, delusion, and so forth, remaining in the latter three, one realizes the fruit of once-returner; hence it says "perpetually abandoning the three fetters and attenuating greed, hostility, and delusion." Furthermore, a person of stream-entry first abandons three fetters among the five fetters binding to the lower realms. A person of the fruit of once-returner further abandons the former six grades of greed and hostility; now, one further abandons the latter three grades of the two fetters of greed and hostility; continuing from the preceding, it says "abandoning the five lower fetters to establish the fruit of non-returner." This person of the fruit of non-returner has already become free from the afflictions of seeing across the three realms and free from the afflictions of cultivation in the desire realm. Now, one is further freed from the afflictions of cultivation in the eight grounds of the form and formless realms; continuing from the preceding, it therefore says "perpetually abandoning all afflictions to establish the fourth fruit."
