Tai said: The previous cultivation of the five calming [contemplations] remedies predominant afflictions; one first cultivates one's own contemplation to purify and remedy one's own afflictions, and only then realizes a concentrated mind. If one is a practitioner of equal proportions, there is no distinct affliction to remedy; merely following the afflictions one delights in, one practices contemplation of impurity up to contemplation of the six elements, taking that object as one's focal object merely to cause the mind to abide; because there is no predominant affliction to remedy, it is not a purifying practice.
