Ji said: Persons of greed, hostility, delusion, and so forth all have their remedies; prior to the five contemplations that calm the mind, what is called concentration arises through the distinct power of the focal object. A practitioner of greed practices the contemplation of impurity and cultivates it diligently, and only then does the mind become stable. A practitioner of equal proportions possesses all of them, and whatever practice they engage in, they can cultivate it. Therefore it says that for a practitioner of equal proportions, among the five calming [contemplations] their mind becomes stable, yet it is not a purifying practice. Someone said that they also abandon afflictions, but this is incorrect. The older explanation says: the contemplation of counting the breath eliminates the two grades of vitarka and vicāra. Now it eliminates only vitarka; hence it only speaks of the practice of discursive thought (vitarka), not eliminating vicāra.
