The seventeenth explains undertaking practice being empty and without fruition. Regarding 'second, because instructions are not conformed to': for instance, Śāriputra taught a washerman's son to practice the contemplation of breathing and a bead-driller to practice the contemplation of impurity; because of incorrect instruction, they did not attain the noble path. Among the three causes and conditions, if one possesses two but lacks one, or has one but lacks two, in all cases one fails to attain the fruition. Ji says: Due to three causes and conditions, it is empty and without fruition, meaning the fruition of the taintless path, not worldly fruition. How is this known? It can be said that although one attains concentration, because there is no instruction—that is, true instruction is not conformed to—no taintless [path] arises, and hence it is empty and without fruition.
