From "If you thus turn away from dark factors" onward, the second part explains the characteristics of faults. Regarding the "ten marks such as form," some commentators explain: these are the four great elements, blue, yellow, red, white, male, and female. Now it is said: they are form, sound, smell, taste, touch, male, female, birth, old age, and death. Regarding the "eight conceptual investigations such as desire," they are: desire, malice, cruelty, deathlessness, relatives, countries, and pleasures formerly performed or experienced. Tai says: these are the eight bad reflections; the five hindrances such as greed are called the secondary afflictions, as stated in the Abhidharma. Regarding "such marks are able to cause the mind to act with haste, and so forth": this clarifies the prominent faults of the three phenomena consisting of marks and the like. Bei says: this corresponds to the explanation in the preceding text, where obstructing the aspiration for renunciation is called "yearning," and obstructing the mind of detachment is called "restlessness." Tai says: these three phenomena are the substance of the truth of suffering and not the substance of the noble; hence they are called "suffering, not noble." Moreover, regarding "You should rely on ... up to ... the contemplation of the joy of cessation": this teaches the cultivation of the six contemplations to remedy the preceding faults. Among the six contemplations, the first two remedy the faults of the first ten marks. Previously, by grasping at the ten marks such as form, the mind was made to act with haste. Now, by contemplating the ten marks as definitively markless, and forming the notion of inactivity within the markless, one does not give rise to hasty activity. The next two remedy the eight conceptual investigations: previously, due to the eight kinds of conceptual investigations, yearning was produced; now, by forming the notion of non-conceptualization regarding those matters of greed, malice, and so forth, and not engaging in yearning or restlessness within non-conceptualization, these two contemplations remedy conceptual investigations. However, among the eight, by combining the actions performed in their original places and the pleasures formerly experienced into one, they are also called seven conceptual investigations. The last two remedy the secondary afflictions: previously, by giving rise to secondary afflictions, the mind was defiled, constantly unquiet, and constantly tormented; now, cultivating the characteristic of tranquility prevents the secondary afflictions from arising, thus freeing it from torment.
