From "Moreover, regarding that... up to ...clearly present before oneself": this encourages one to recognize precisely whether distraction and non-distraction are clearly present before oneself. Below, it reveals the characteristics of distraction and non-distraction to be understood: if, at the time of correct contemplation, marks, conceptual investigations, and secondary afflictions arise, one should know this is distraction; if, at the time of contemplation, the mind is single-pointed and cultivates in accordance with the six contemplations, one should know this is non-distraction. From "Moreover, regarding these characteristics of distraction and non-distraction you... up to ...proceed tranquil, without marks, and without conceptualization": having understood the characteristics of distraction and non-distraction, one should immediately settle upon a single focal object and cause the mind to remain in an unbroken stream of tranquility. From "Moreover, if your mind... up to ...arouse diligent vigor": this encourages one to understand that the arising of faults is subtle and difficult to detect, so to seek the identification of faults one must apply diligent vigor.
