Regarding "If, as soon as this... up to ...one should cultivate tranquility": if observing the blue-bruised state requires straining with effort to arise, one should immediately withdraw the mind to abide in internal tranquility and not take the blue-bruised state as a focal object. From "Having thus caused the mind to be inwardly tranquil... up to ...proceeds tranquil": from initially observing a single corpse to eventually boundless [corpses], one inwardly condenses one's mind, not apprehending the marks of boundless blue-bruised states and the like. Yet the mind arises facing that blue-bruised state, hence it is said "not entirely abandoning it"; furthermore, one does not form conceptual notions of the blue-bruised state, hence it is said "nor does one conceptualize it." At that time, the mind still faces the blue-bruised state without conceptualization, hence it is said: "merely upon this focal mark, one settles one's mind, and proceeds tranquil, without marks, and without conceptualization." Tai says: subtly eliminating and subtly condensing the focal domain of the contemplation of impurity, it does not become prominent; however, because one observes subtle form, one does not entirely abandon the conceptualized mark; within the subtle form, one also does not attentively conceptualize, ultimately saying, "I observe subtle form, and right within this focal domain of subtle form I settle the mind, proceeding tranquil, free of multiple forms of marks and attentive conceptualization."
