In the first repetition, explaining cause, origination, arising, and condition: regarding the statement that knowing craving is able to induce suffering is called 'cause': Jing says: "Whenever there is craving, it necessarily induces suffering; therefore, craving in relation to suffering is generally called 'cause.'" Ji says: "Take, for example, encountering an agreeable object in the present and giving rise to craving toward it: one should know that this immediately perfumes craving and so forth to form seeds. When these form seeds, they further cause the seeds of future birth and so forth to increase therein. Because this craving can induce and produce these seeds of birth and so forth, it is called 'cause.' Regarding the statement that, having induced suffering, it further gathers it and causes it to be born, and is therefore called 'origination': Jing says: "Craving, having induced suffering, further gathers karma to cause future suffering to be born; hence it is called 'origination.'" Ji says: "The aforementioned craving is able to moisten the branch of formations and so forth to form existence; origination can produce future fruit. This craving can gather other meanings, hence it is called 'origination.' Regarding the statement that, having produced suffering, it causes it to arise, and is therefore called 'arising': Jing says: "Having gathered that karma and future suffering having been born, now causing suffering to arise, craving is called 'arising.'" Ji says: "Craving, having perfumed the seeds, can cause the seeds of suffering to generate the active manifestation of suffering such as birth. Craving can cause seeds of birth and so forth to arise in active manifestation, hence it is called 'arising.'"
