From here on is the second part, clarifying the contemplation of the four truths taking as condition their real nature (yathāvadbhāvikatā): 'The practitioner's mind of contemplation being thus continuous, mutually distinct, newly and newly arising, either increasing or decreasing,' and so forth. Ji says: When a practitioner performs the practice of contemplation, its superiority increasing moment by moment is called 'either increasing'; if it does not decrease its superiority, it is called 'either decreasing'. Existing temporarily and arising spontaneously, since before and after there are increase, decrease, and change, one clearly knows it is impermanent. Since this very mind of contemplation enters into the appropriated aggregates, one clearly knows it is suffering. There is no real phenomenon as erroneously grasped, but only phenomena of suffering; this is called the contemplation of emptiness—the nature of the mind is suffering, and the truly conceived phenomena are suffering. Because the contemplation is free of a second phenomenon, impermanence is real, and the second, falsely conceived real phenomenon is called empty. Being devoid of autonomous function is called the practice of non-self. This is the intention here. The grasping is precisely taking the truth of the path as impermanent and so forth; this is because by way of the semblance mind of contemplation, it is the truth of the path. If judged in terms of the actual mind of contemplation, it is the truth of suffering, because it is tainted. Now, by way of conforming to the supramundane, and furthermore because in this state there is the sense of untaintedness, it is spoken of as the truth of the path. If viewed according to this sense, one also takes the truth of the path as impermanent, etc. Now, according to the actual meaning, it is the truth of suffering.
