First, general and particular: The older [masters] said that the first holding is general, while the remaining nine are particular. Now the Tripiṭaka Master says: This treatise takes the ten dharmas as its essential nature; among the ten dharmas, those that encompass all dharmas exhaustively are called general, while those that do not encompass them exhaustively are called particular. Because the abodes and the stages universally encompass cause and fruit, they are called general; the remaining eight do not universally encompass cause and fruit, and are therefore called particular.
