文則有二，初略辨三持。第二、云何種姓已下，廣辨。前中，云何名持等者，此略問答出三持體。謂諸菩薩自乘種姓者，是種姓持，為簡二乘故云菩薩，菩薩之人亦有成就二乘種子，唯取大乘種子為種姓持故云自乘，最初發心者即是第二發心持。然雖知發心通於終始，今據勝說，故云最初。

The text then has two parts: First, briefly distinguishing the three supports; second, broadly distinguishing them from 'What is gotra?' onward. In the former, 'What is called support...' and so on briefly questions and answers to bring out the essences of the three supports. The phrase 'the gotra of their own vehicle of all bodhisattvas' is the support of gotra; 'bodhisattva' is stated to distinguish them from the two vehicles. Although a bodhisattva also possesses the seeds of the two vehicles, taking only the Mahāyāna seeds as the support of gotra is why it says 'their own vehicle'. 'Initially generating the aspiration' is the second support of generating the aspiration. Now, although it is known that generating the aspiration pervades from beginning to end, it is now spoken in terms of the preeminent, and therefore says 'initially'.
