Bodhisattva Dharmapāla's doctrinal purport is the same. In Master Jayasena's view there is a slight difference. What is this difference? It means that the support of gotra refers to the beginningless nature of the cognitive obscuration being that which can be severed, and in this sense is called gotra—that is, in the locus where it can be severed there exist taintless seeds; the support of generating the aspiration takes the tainted wisdom of hearing, thinking, and so on at the time of the ten faiths; and the dharmas conducive to awakening are the same in meaning as before. Furthermore, there is another different explanation: the support of gotra is the innate seed, namely before the ten faiths; second, the support of generating the aspiration is from the ten faiths onward; third, the support of dharmas conducive to awakening is from the ten understandings onward. It is also said: the support of gotra means the mind of the ten faiths; second, the support of generating the bodhicitta means the station of the ten understandings; and the support of dharmas conducive to awakening means the station of the ten practices. Although there are these interpretations, they are inconclusive, lacking textual basis and verification; how could they be relied upon? Furthermore, the support of gotra refers to the innate gotra; for the support of generating the aspiration, it is acceptable to take the initial aspiration before the ten faiths during the myriad kalpas of the ten powers, and it is also acceptable to take the true generation of the bodhicitta on the first bhūmi. Here, if one makes a general structural division of the First Yoga, then the first seventeen chapters directly explain the characteristics of the Bodhisattvabhūmi, while the final chapter brings forward the benefits of accepting and upholding to encourage people to practice and study; if not, one simply judges that within the First Yoga there are these three supports, and explains these three supports.
