若依護法云：始從十信已前及在地前四十心位，是姓種，在地前時雖為有漏聞熏資發本種功能增長，猶是本有種類，是故判入姓種所收，以經地前未有現行無漏別熏成種，故無無漏習種姓，故種姓居前但有有漏聞熏種子名習種姓，入地已去無漏現行熏成種子即有無漏習姓體，義在於後。基解別之，入文當述。

According to Dharmapāla: beginning from before the ten stages of faith and continuing through the forty mental states prior to the stages, this is the natural gotra. While prior to the stages, although the functions of the original seeds are assisted and activated by conditioned hearing and perfuming so that they increase, they are still of the category of original existence, and are therefore judged to be included within the natural gotra. Because prior to the stages there is not yet an active taintless mind separately perfuming and forming seeds, there is no taintless cultivated gotra. Hence the gotra is anterior, and there are only seeds of conditioned hearing and perfuming called the cultivated gotra. After entering the stages, active taintless dharmas perfume and form seeds, so there is the essence of the taintless cultivated gotra; in meaning, this comes later. Kuiji's explanation differs from this; it will be expounded when entering the text.
