Ji states: Prior to the ten faiths, accomplishing the bodhisattva gotra already surpasses the learners and non-learners of the two vehicles, not to mention all other ordinary beings. Why? All sentient beings possess the two obscurations. However, when from beginningless time prior to the seven skillful means one accomplishes the gotra of the two vehicles, because the affliction obscuration can be severed, they will only be able to realize purification from the affliction obscuration; because the cognitive obscuration can never be severed, they will not realize purification from the cognitive obscuration. However, afflictions have heaviness and lightness, and faculties have sharpness and dullness; hence the two vehicles differ. If one accomplishes the bodhisattva gotra, from beginningless time prior to the ten faiths, because the two obscurations will definitely be severable, when viewed in relation to those four kinds [of practitioners], it is unsurpassably supreme. This is without distinction in meaning from establishing the five gotras based on the presence or absence of obscurations with respect to the realm of tathatā in the Viniścayasaṃgrahaṇī, as will be explained there.
