The Tripiṭaka Master says: If manas did not possess the cognitive obscuration of attachment to dharmas, there would be great difficulties. As the Yogācāra states, the ālaya at the very least must operate concurrently with one consciousness. If, when those learners and non-learners of the two vehicles enter the cessation attainment, there were no manas, then at that time the ālaya would operate as a single consciousness alone, and one could not say that at the very least two consciousnesses operate concurrently. Furthermore, the seventy-eighth fascicle states: From the eighth stage onward, no afflictions are active, and only the cognitive obscuration serves as their support. When the mental consciousness of those on the eighth stage and above enters the contemplation of the emptiness of persons, manas immediately gives rise to attachment to dharmas, which is called possessing the cognitive obscuration. Therefore, both the sixth and seventh consciousnesses give rise to both obscurations.
