The concluding text states: 'It should be known that this is called the coarse characteristics by which a bodhisattva's gotra can be inferred.' Tai says: Maitreya himself says, 'I am a bodhisattva, and can only inferentially know through these coarse characteristics in various matters the gotra within the persons of sentient beings; as for definitive and realized direct knowledge, only the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, ultimately sees it in direct perception; I, Maitreya, cannot see it in direct perception.' Ji says: Because the subtle characteristics of a bodhisattva's gotra are difficult to know, one now inferentially knows the gotra through practices. Hence it is said that 'one can infer the coarse characteristics of a bodhisattva's gotra.' The opening text of this section states: 'Through these characteristics, it enables others to clearly know that one is truly a bodhisattva; its subtle characteristics and definitive real meaning can only be known by a Buddha.' Here, deference is simply given to the Buddha; it does not say that 'I also do not know it.' What the ancients said—that Maitreya did not know—is mistaken. For as the Shanjiejing says: 'I have already briefly explained the coarse characteristics of the gotra; the remaining real meanings can only be known by a Buddha'—[if read their way,] this would mean Śākyamuni did not know either! One should know this is merely deferring to the Buddha; it is not that Maitreya did not know, but rather saying that the Buddha knows ultimately, whereas 'I also know, but not ultimately.' From 'Because of the bodhisattvas' gotras' up to 'the rest is unreasonable', this is the third part, which provides an overall summary of the gotra and its characteristics. Jing says: 'Because of all the gotras possessed by bodhisattvas' refers to the substance of the gotra.
