8.379

前中，由四因緣不能速證。一、未值佛說無倒道此未發心；二、雖聞說發心顛倒修學；三、雖說無倒而方便慢緩，此三並在十信已前；第四、已入地前四位，善根未熟，初地資糧未得圓滿，因緣闕故不能速證初地菩提，如小乘中下種成就，若成就者必入見道，此中亦爾，既言善根未熟，將知此人未入初地。

Regarding the former, due to four causes and conditions one cannot swiftly realize it: 1. not having encountered a Buddha preaching the non-erroneous path, so that one has not yet aroused the mind [for bodhi]; 2. though hearing the teaching, arousing the mind and practicing mistakenly; 3. though it is taught without error, being lax in skillful means—these three are all prior to the ten faiths; 4. having entered the four stages prior to the bhūmis, the roots of goodness are not yet ripe and the provisions for the first bhūmi are not yet complete, so due to the lack of causes and conditions one cannot swiftly realize the bodhi of the first bhūmi. Just as in the Hīnayāna, when the planting of seeds is perfected, if perfected one will certainly enter the path of seeing; here it is also like this: since it says the roots of goodness are not yet ripe, one should know that this person has not yet entered the first bhūmi.
